CREADREAM IN LIBRARY - TOOL KIT

CreaDream Forum in Library -project aims at developing a TOOL KIT of concepts, methods and tools for adult educators to increase their competence of supporting people when learning the key skills of information society. The final beneficiary of the project results is the adult learner.

BACKGROUND AND APPLICATION

The library of the future should be a place where everybody can shine. It is an open arena and a centre for reading and learning, as well as a place to find inspiration and to discover new worlds. It is a source of joy, happiness, friendship and multiculturalism.

The libraries are chosen to be the centres of the CreaDream Forum in Library, because in communities, large or small, it is the the public libraries that provide information, tools needed and the actual place. They are also the natural environment, where people encounter one another.

The big question is, how libraries and other organizations can encourage people to study the key skills needed in modern society.

For this reason, the libraries and the other adult educators should have a series of tools and methods, how to achieve that end.

Application

In the Library development project it has gradually  become clear that the fact more important than the new actions for the project planning would be for the action organizers to find out how to inspire people to create positive attitudes to taking part in Library activities,  studying the new key skills and to taking responsibility of their own competence development.

From this came the idea to develop a tool box provided methods to support motivation. Thus the aim of the project CreaDream Forum in Library has been to develop a TOOL KIT containing good practices, effective models and methods to promote help for those actors who work with supporting modern adult society skills.

By increasing their own professional competency these persons will be better qualified to guide and activate the customers to command the modern key competences needed in our society.

During the project partners from Finland, Estonia and Latvia in cooperation, develop, test and analyze a variety of support activities to this purpose. The main focus in activating actions will be to increase motivation.

The tool kit gives confidence and provides facilities when facing different kinds of learners, and also helps in planning how the various aspects concerning the educational surroundings can be arranged in order to promote and facilitate the learning processes.

The  ultimate aim of our produced tool kit is to highlight  things that can increase the well-being and enthusiasm for  life .
The tool kit is not, and does not attempt to be comprehensive. We have collected tips in order to inspire in CreaDream Forum in Library - project.

The tool kit analysis is based on ”mass flourishing” - thinking (Edmund Phelps, http://press.princeton.edu/titles/10058.html) and Finnish ”Joukkokukoistus” (Lauri Järvilehto, Sonja Strömsholm, Frank Martela, Filosofian Akatemia Oy, 2014, Committee for the Future/ the Parliament of Finland (Tulevaisuusvaliokunta, Suomen eduskunta). https://joukkokukoistus.fi

UBUNTU, TACKIT KNOWLEDGE and GOLDEN RULE

In our project "CreaDream Forum in Library" basic philosophy has been Southern African concept UBUNTU, often  roughly translated as "humanity towards others",  but actually  it is more:  "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity”.

In various actions we have tried also to find tacit knowledge. TACIT KNOWLEDGE may be hidden and it is important to find out ways, how to dig it out .Tacit knowledge is the kind of knowledge that is difficult to transfer to another person by means of writing it down or verbalizing it.

In addition to Ubuntu -concept we have tried to follow  the golden rule. The GOLDEN RULE of law or the principle of reciprocity is to treat others as one would wish to be treated yourself . It is the foundation of many peoples, religions and human cultures.

THE IMPORTANCE OF OPEN COMMUNICATION

Open communication policy inside the organization will create an environment that allows ideas to flourish on every level. It will create a space where persons of feel they have a voice and therefore they will be more willing to try new things and to start new projects.

Essentially important is a tight cooperation inside the organization. Clear vision and clear plans for what the organization is trying to achieve with the help of everyday work and what is the final goal are important. This all can be seen through inner-organization communication, e.g. openness, cooperation and motivation.

The information must be clear, in plain language. You can forget jargon. It is also good to remember the opportunities offered by the Internet translations (specially in modern multi-language environment) . The pictures can tell things. They can be used as a mean to share message , not only as stock photos. In addition messages are clear,  they also could be  fun and creative .

Changing communication creative and playful is also is learning area . Such communication skills development could take place for example with cooperation some art schools or artists.

MOTIVATION IS BASED ON HUMAN NEEDS

According to Karoliina Jarenko, a researcher and the directing manager of the Finnish Academy, the so called inner motivation is one of the basic needs of the human being, namely freedom, flow and responsibility.

Karoliina Jarenko speaks about  the so called inner motivation, which is one of the basic needs of the human being: the freedom to act in one’s own, personal way and use one’s creativity in the inspiring flow- state, and the need to achieve meaningful aims to benefit either him/herself in private life or in the group/ in the surrounding area, responsibility to other people.

Freedom means the ability to act : self-awareness, sufficient resources and feeling of well-being.
Flow refers to the achievement of results,  the development of skills and knowledge and the flow mode in working .
Responsibility means working for common good,  encountering people, possibility to serve others and the experience of relevance .

Freedom, flow and responsibility form the process of sustainable development . Freedom make individual preferences more clear. Activities  which come from genuine interests lead to flow experience and will to grow one´s skills. Enthusiastic and competent work to benefit of   others as well as own benefit bring  more well-being and make others in good working community support each other and increase feelings of freedom and flow.

The new ideas will be better organised and brought to life by motivated employees. Being heard and taken into account by their superiors will  empower the employees by giving them a higher sense of worth in themselves and motivating them to achieve more in their work tasks. This will in turn drive them towards providing better services and organizing better events for the public.

The participants from the public sphere will respond better to a well-organised event which has organisers who are obviously very motivated. This will create a space where the change is more easily going to happen in the participants. They will be more open to it.

The participants will go out into their daily lives, back into the public. They will keep spreading the change that they experienced with a much higher likelihood.

The key is that you actually take steps towards your freedom, flow and your responsibility and at the same time support the neighbor's efforts to internally motivating everyday life!

We together can take care of that in a society generates such structures that allow everyone an inspiring and supportive everyday life!

MASS FLOURISHING

The aim is that the individual, motivated people form a community that can gain a mass flourishing state.
Mass flourishing is a state, where workers are doing their job in an enthusiastic and developing way. At this state they feel to be active parts in both planning and implementing new ideas. It is important that people´s life aims meet the community’s aims.

At this flourishing flow state persons are ready to support the customers to develop, participate and learn new issues that are needed in the modern world.

Mass flourishing requires that the employees
’ basic needs,  freedom, flow and the responsibility will be fulfilled.

PROCESS OF BUILDING CREADREAM TOOL KIT

In national and in international meetings we have gone through those things , which we considered to affect to motivation. Specially we looked at the motivation of the organizers . About every event organizer made a collage and told her own experiences. These reports were reviewed and  of their content  a  tool kit was formed.

CONCLUSIONS ON HOW TO SUPPORT MOTIVATION

In the project “CreaDream Forum in Library”, we have focused on developing functions that support the building of motivation. We have found out that the building blocks of motivation contain basic needs like freedom, growth and sense of community. When these needs are supported it increases openness to new ideas, readiness to do new things, and gives courage to implement new ideas.

During the project, it was discovered, too, that the best possibilities to motivate other people are possessed by a person who themselves is motivated to work  with the case in question. The first step is the motivation of the organizers and the second step is motivating the participants.

On the basis of experiences gained in the “CreaDream Forum in Library” project we can say that it is important to focus on the activation of the staff, so it would be possible to achieve a mass flourishing and with that go on to achieving good results in the national and international development environment. If the organizer is not motivated then it is difficult to inspire participants and disseminate the ideas and values that we are trying to send out into the world. Too many organizations start planning their activities by asking staff for specific, numerical, measurable results without first making sure that the staff has the personal and professional motivation/tools to make these demands a reality.

It is important to ensure that each employee can do one’s work by involving their own perspectives in the best possible, personal way and are also able to feel that the work fulfills their own personal life goals. When an individual´s values and objectives are parallel to the library’s values and objectives, and the employee can see these parallels, the motivation to work for the organization’s benefit will grow.

MASS FLOURISHING ELEMENTS:

SELF KNOWLEDGE

In order for it to be possible to support the realization of people's personal aims and interests, these interests must first be identified. This is often not clear even to the persons themselves. This is why everyone who is involved in the organization has to acknowledge what their desires and strengths are. If you do not know what you want, how can you achieve your aims or be motivated enough to achieve the aims of your employer or your customer?

Self-knowledge itself is one of the key factors in increasing a person’s well-being. Well-being is the foundation to making one’s life meaningful. Without it, one cannot focus on higher goals. Once you know what your goals are, and you can see the connection between them and your tasks at work, you are able to rise above the minimum that is required by your employer and things that are meaningful for you, have personal connotations and are therefore enjoyable, you have achieved inner motivation. This will give you a higher probability of reaching better work-related results and fulfill the organization’s goals.

FREEDOM

Freedom in this context means that all employees are accepted in their unique way of working. It means that an individual feels that his/her way of doing tasks is not given from the outside and you are able to find your own best method of working. The goal of one’s job/ task (job description) can be very strictly regulated, but the way of achieving the goal has lot of freedom and choices. For example, one can choose the place where to work or the methods to work.

FLOW

The flow in this context means the possibility to realize one´s own ideas and the feeling that the implementation of the ideas are encouraged and supported.

Flow mode gives a sense of competence and allows for personal development. In flow mode it is possible to believe the realization of the goals and the opportunity to live in the target -oriented life.

RESPONSIBILITY

Responsibility concentrates to the common community.
  • possibility to serve others
  • own work as a part of whole community work
  • feeling to be remarkable member of the community

The CreaDream Forum in Library -project´s rest the Ubuntu concept, which requires that when acting we do that in favor of all people . Working as a group will also produce benefits for all. In addition to the freedom and the flow the responsibility is needed.  When working together  it is possible to achieve results which was not possible when acting alone.

When you feel free to act in your way and work in flow mode, it is natural to feel cohesion to  job place and feel doing work for the benefit on library and society as a whole. The work also feels important . More sense of membership of the work community gives, when colleagues and management give acknowledgement your style to work.

To this responsibility also includes besides doing things together the fact that knowledge and skills are shared and joint actions will be carried out together.

Responsibility has two aspects: the relationship with other people and and to the group.  Working together has many different models. What kind of cooperation will be selected  depends on which form of cooperation is readiness.

It should be remembered that goal in any case is that every individual´s needs and skills would be fulfilled. Thus cooperation could benefit both individuals and the group. It is possible when sharing power and responsibility for all. This also increases motivation.

DIVERSITY

Diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization. That sounds simple, but diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, education, background and more. Diversity not only involves how people perceive themselves, but how they perceive others. That affects their interactions.

Diversity will increase significantly in the coming years. Successful organizations recognize the need for immediate action and are ready and willing to spend resources on managing diversity in the workplace now.

From EQUALITY to EQUITY

The terms equality and equity are sometimes used  as having the same meaning, which can lead to confusion because while these concepts are related, there are also important distinctions between them.

Both equality and equity aim to promote fairness and justice.

Equality aims to ensure that everyone gets the same things, but it can only work if everyone starts from the same place and needs the same things.

Equity involves trying to understand and give people what they need.

EVALUATION

How could the evaluation increase the enthusiasm and motivation in the learning process and to the participation activity?

In the CreaDream Forum in Library - project we have discussed how the evaluation could increase enthusiasm and motivation in the learning process and to the participation activity. It is not only the question of evaluation of the event or project’s success on general level, but how did the actions responded to the participant's own wishes, needs and expectations.

We think that this kind of self-evaluation is important because it’s good for a person to stop and think, how new things have been adopted and how things replied to one's own needs regarding to the knowledge or learning new things. These things are easy to forget without reminding. We believe that self-evaluation can also raise thoughts what you already know about the subject under discussion and about what you would like to have more information.

The evaluation afterwards can be done in many ways. For example so that at the beginning the participants are given a small object, which he should return after the event, but only if he feels that the event was not useful for oneself. Note! Organizers are not controlling what the participants objectively received by participating to the event, but the purpose is to make the participants to reflect what things were important to them and also what things they felt to be a new and interesting. Everyone is responsible of one´s own learning! The goal is to support the learning and make people to think about the process.

Still more efficient to the learning process is when the evaluation takes place before and after the event. Before the event evaluation will focus on the expectations and aspirations, afterwards on how these expectations and hopes realized.

It is possible to develop a very wide range of methods of self-evaluation, only your imagination sets the limits. Sure you can use a fillable forms, but evaluation can be completed also by funny ways. The fun takes away tension, relaxes and gives room for creative thinking. When developing methods it is also good to remember to consider different senses. That brings a nice change to evaluation process, too.
